by Sir Arthur Sullivan (arr. Gerald Manning)
In Act II after the Opening Chorus “On such eyes as maidens cherish” which is sung by twenty love-sick maidens, the elderly and portly Lady Jane is seen in a glade, leaning on a violoncello on which she presently accompanies herself in the Recitative and Solo “Sad is that woman’s lot” in which she bewails the fate of women whose charms decrease as their size increases.

by Anonymous - Time of James I (arr. Gerald Manning)
Found in various publications ‘The Willow Song’ comes from Desdemona’s song in ‘Othello’ and is one of the best known of the traditional Shakespeare airs. Another version is found in a little manuscript volume in the British Museum from the reign of James I with a text by Ben Jonson which is entitled ‘Have you seen but a white lily grow’, and it is worthwhile comparing it with the Shakespeare version, so I have arranged it as well.
