by Edward Elgar (arr. Gerald Manning)
There is no doubt that when it came to writing a good ‘March’, Elgar was a master of the genre because of the sheer beauty in the melodic invention, and this Imperial March (Opus 32) was no exception. Commissioned by the publishers Novello for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 1897 it was an instant success, and was performed on several royal occasions.

by Gustav Holst (arr. Gerald Manning)
The text for this patriotic hymn was appended to the fourth movement of Gustav Holst’s suite of seven tone poems known as ‘The Planets’, by Cecil Spring-Rice in 1918. Diana, Princess of Wales, requested this hymn be sung at her wedding, saying it had “always been a favourite since schooldays.” It was also sung at her funeral in 1997.
