Malcolm Tattersall

Living in Mundingburra, Australia

Malcolm Tattersall is an Australian musician with a special interest in woodwinds, particularly recorder.
He was born in country Victoria, studied music (with major studies in recorder and composition) at Melbourne University after working for a few years in electronics and computing, and was then primarily a woodwind teacher for twenty-five years after graduating in 1980.
As a student he was immersed in modernism, both as a recorder player and as a composer, and many of his works of the 1980s are atonal and exploit the extended woodwind techniques which are so effective on recorder. At the same time, however, his ongoing participation in both early music and Irish-Australian folk music emerged in arrangements and original pieces written from within those traditions.
He left Melbourne in April 1990 to live in Townsville. Most of his compositional work since then has been prompted by his needs as a performer and teacher, and consists of arrangements and transcriptions for woodwinds with an emphasis on traditional music and the baroque.
He has been self-publishing his music under the Cootamundra Music imprint for twenty years and has also been published by Orpheus Music and Allans.
