Scratch the Surface I (2009) - orchestra by Christopher Chaplin
"Scratch the Surface I" is the first movement of a 3 to 4 movement orchestral piece which I hope to complete in the near future. The title refers to a technique used by painters who scrape back thick layers of paint which they applied previously. It also refers to scratches on vinyl records, bouncing back the pickup arm, repeating a passage over and over again.

Shock and Awe
I'm not sure whether I am more in awe of the magnificent soundset Christopher has at his disposal or the stunning use to which he puts it! This orchestration is truly masterful. I have said some nice things about some pieces, and I have been pretty nasty about others, but I try to avoid superlatives - with this, I simply can't. I was mesmerised from beginning to end with the simple complexity, the natural and seemingly effortlss pace of the work, the consistency of the material which, whilst I could never predict what would happen next, nevertheless kept me comfortably within this extraordinary sound-world which he has created. Nothing on Sibelius as yet had prepared me for this - I await the remainder of the set with drooling anticipation.
