Hymn tune goes wild!
I always liked ol' Ebenezer, but never thought I'd hear it sound like this! Schweitzer has something going on all the time - if one or two voices have a version of the tune that is close to the original (although in 5/4!), then other voices have syncopated accompaniment. I like the cascading triplets and the chorale style sections (even with the parallel 5ths). When there are straight 4/4 quarter notes, that is such a contrast that is exciting. Changes of meter keep up the interest. As to the lyrics, using just fragments of the verses caused some rhymes to be left out, which I missed. The ending is a little weak after so much activity, and I'm not a fan of nosense syllables. Overall, this is a very imaginative interpretation of a beloved tune.
