Little Hymn Tune for Strings, Op. 4 (2000) - string orchestra by Jordi Vives i Batlle
This piece is a little hymn tune in four parts. The music came to me during a bright summer day and I pencilled it in my garden, under a tree. I decided not to add any lyrics as it seemed to go well as an instrumental piece. Initially set for the keyboard, I subsequently tried numerous instrumentations and found the string arrangement to be the most pleasing. The piece is meant to be simple, expressing the happy feelings experienced during that old summer day under the blue sky.

Very pleasant
Mr. Vives has done an excellent with his orchestration. Writing for a string orchestra can be tricky, especially if the cello's and basses are playing in unison. But this is not the case here. Although the cello's and basses share the same general harmonic arc, the two parts are different, so balance will not be an issue.
As far as musical quality goes, I really think that this is very good. I could definately see this as part of a service, or as a warm up piece for a intermediate string orchestra. Phrasing and dynamics all makes sense. Although, I do have one suggestion. The melody should be passed to some of the other sections, though the length of the piece may not make this feasable. Still, a very pleasant piece of music.
What a charming piece!
It is quite brave to write such a piece of music, these days. The more happy you have to be if that work
is a success and Jordi Vives can be quite content with it. What I found particularly interesting (except of the nice
melody) is the Violoncello - Contrabass unsiono duett. It is something like "Theme and Variation" played at
the same time (although the variations are quite small).
Nice melody, but metric problems
Being a composer and master of musicology myself, i must second what Virgil said. Your phrases start with an upbeat but are notated as downbeats, this should be fixed. While Bach's Badinerie barlines are correct, in your piece, you definitely have to write upbeats. Otherwise, nice tune!
