Samantha (1980) - big band by Sammy Nestico (Sammy Nestico Music)
SAMANTHA
Originally written for and played by Bud Shank, it is a showpiece for alto saxophone. The arrangement carries a wide dynamic range, and needs a very soft but smooth approach for background figures. An extremely large swell in bars 32 qnd 33 leqad to a very powerful few bars of ensemble. It remains full until bar 50 and progresses into a quiet ending containing a brass pyramid.

My favorite ballad
If you have a strong lead alto, then you might want to give this chart a try. I've played it and it's awesome. Try to hear the recording done by Nestico's band because it truly has become one of my favorite songs.

Amazing ballad
I played this one in my high school jazz band (Martin Murphy Jazz Band) about 14 years ago. I think I was second chair trumpet. It's one of the best jazz ballads I've ever heard. I even bought the CD of Sammy Nestico's music called Night Flight. It has this on it, as well as several other great Nestico songs. I hope he writes more pieces like this. I've looked for more CDs of his but there are hardly any in print.
