Gustav Merkel (1827-1885) was an organist who played, taught and wrote for the instrument in and around the Dresden area. He may have heard or seen the saxophone but, to my knowledge, never wrote for it. However, his music translates to sax quartet with ease. It is interesting to play and makes pleasant listening.
