Some time back, I was reviewing a recital in Plymouth's Mother Church, featuring trumpet and organ. One of the pieces heard was in the nature of a slow meditation, which appealed a good deal, and I wanted to compose something in a similar vein.

I originally wrote it for Flugelhorn and organ, as the rather more mellow tone of the instrument would better suit the somewhat 'devotional' nature of the writing.

Since the piece appeared on SibeliusMusic, I have had a number of requests to make an arrangement for piano solo.

It has additionally been arranged for the National Saxophone Choir, by Nigel Wood of Saxtet Publications, who performed it at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival to great acclaim. The attached MP3 file, taken from their first CD, Sax in the City, features Nigel, playing Soprillo, and adding his own improvisations over the basic accompaniment, to great effect, I think..
