Torches (2004) - piano & vocal by Philip R Buttall (PRB Music)

This is a setting of the traditional old French carol, Torches, in a fairly up-beat tempo.

As it is a very short piece, I have repeated the final verse, and added some fairly straightforward harmony, as well as a descant. I hope that the upward semitone shift doesn't sound too hackneyed!

A friendly drummer would, I'm sure, help to move things along with a real lift!

At last
After nearly an hour of pressing the 'I'm still feeling lucky' button I was begining to find that in pressing the button I was lying to myself. Fortunately along came this piece, of Mr Buttal's, which I enjoyed very much. I am fascinated by how each of his works conatain enough musical invention and enough fun to work, but this piece is further proof that he does not fail. An interesting subject, a wonderfully up-beat treatment, and has already been mentioned a gem of an introduction. 10/10.

Immense fun!
Am loving yet another Buttall masterpiece - so simple yet so effective, with lovely challenging moments (eg. "sleep - ing") which can be used in training younger voices to notice little things like that. A catchy tune, loving the quasi-Baroque intro, and a good alternative version to the excellent Joubert.
