Elegy (version for Euphonium / Baritone) (2001) - solo instrument & piano by Philip R Buttall (PRB Music)
Occasionally composers have made more than one use out of a particular tune during their lifetime, often in a different guise. 'New Tomorrows' was a song I wrote back in 1974, but the melody has often suggested an alternative instrumental treatment. Whilst the original was for soprano, I felt that the singing quality of the cello would be ideally suited, and the wider range gave me some opportunities to embellish the original setting. Whilst not intended to copy Fauré's similarly-named work for ... (more)

Hi Philip,
I have heard some of your pieces before, and I like your work. I also like this piece - I am not a euphonium player, but I am a trumpet player, and I think that this piece would work very, very nicely for flugelhorn, especially seeing as how the transposition and clef are identical (or Bb trumpet as well, but I think flugel would work better).
This piece reminds me of Arthur Benjamin's Romance-Impromptu, I think because of the harmonies you use, as well as the syncopated rhythm in the piano accompaniment. I liked how that rhythm ended at G - it kept things fresh. You might not want to put this in the score, but I think that I would either do a rallentando two bars before G, or crescendo into G and right at G, have a subito piano.
I hope to be able to write something like this someday!

What a wonderful piece!
I really love this! The first time I heard it here, I was struck by how beautifully it was done.
I would love to play this on my G baritone bugle!

Lovely!
This is a beautiful piece of music. Ideally suited to the tenor range of the Euphonium. It would be nice to see a transcri[tion for possibly cello as well although the key would need to be altered to suit the instrument.
But still a lovely piece of music!
