In the Middle Ages, Christians were frequently enjoined to meditate on the Passion of Christ. By dwelling in their devotions upon the suffering humanity of Jesus, his followers were moved to sorrow for their sins that made his suffering necessary. The words for the three songs in this suite are translated from Middle English lyrics written presumably as aids to penitential meditation.
